Earth Day is a day celebrated annually on April 22nd to protect our planet. Organized and founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson, and first celebrated in 1970 focused on the United States, it was taken internationally in 1990. Earth Day events in more than 193 countries are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.

So what can you do on Earth Day, and perhaps every day, to make a difference? Here are some tips to help you reduce your environmental impact and live a more sustainable life:

  1. Reduce your energy use: Turn off lights and electronics when you leave the room or when you’re not using them, use energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances, and consider installing a programmable thermostat.
  2. Use less water: Fix leaky faucets, take shorter showers, and consider installing low-flow showerheads and toilets.
  3. Reduce waste: Recycle as much as possible, bring reusable bags and containers when shopping. And, now that it’s springtime, you can compost food scraps and yard waste.
  4. Eat sustainably: Choose foods that are grown and produced locally, eat more plant-based meals (you may start by practicing a Meatless Monday), and reduce your consumption of processed and packaged foods.
  5. Use public transportation, walk or bike: Reduce your carbon footprint by taking public transportation, walking or biking instead of driving alone. You won’t even notice that you’re burning calories.
  6. Shop responsibly: Support sustainable businesses and buy products made from recycled materials. Consider buying second-hand items when possible.
  7. Plant a tree or start a garden: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and provide habitat for wildlife. A garden can provide fresh produce and reduce the amount of land used for agriculture — not to mention keeping more money in your pocket.
  8. Support conservation efforts: Donate to organizations that protect natural habitats, support clean energy initiatives and participate in local environmental projects.

Remember, even small actions can make a big difference when it comes to protecting the planet.

Make every day Earth Day…Reduce…Reuse…Recycle…

Happy Earth Day!
