4 Ways to Naturally Cure Allergies
Early summer is one of my favorite times of year. With all the sunshine and greenery, it’s hard not to be in a good mood! Unfortunately, with spring flowers come spring allergies. If you’re all too familiar with the itchy eyes, sneezing, and stuffiness that are the telltale signs of spring allergies, there may be a way for you to reduce your symptoms without taking prescription or over-the-counter medications.
Before you stop taking allergy medications to give these natural remedies a try, be sure to have your doctor run a test to see what you are allergic too. This will help you determine the best way to treat your symptoms.
Local Honey
If you have a pollen allergy, this one is for you! Eating a spoonful of raw, local, organic honey every day can help boost your immunity to local pollen. It’s important to use local honey, because it contains traces of the local pollen that you are allergic too. It works best if you eat a spoonful all year long, not just during allergy season, to build up your tolerance to pollen. Local honey can be purchased at most health food stores or farmers markets.
Nasal Irrigation
Using a Neti Pot to clear your sinuses isn’t just a trick that works when you have a cold. Using a saline solution to clear out your nasal passages can provide instant relief from allergy symptoms, clearing out the pollen that you’ve been breathing in all day. Before you go to sleep at night, make a saline solution by mixing salt and warm water and then follow the instructions on the Neti Pot. A saline nasal spray will also work. Both options can be purchased at most pharmacies or drug stores.
Foods to Avoid
There are a few foods that can be eliminated from your diet to reduce grass or weed allergies. Echinacea can aggravate allergies, as well as chamomile tea. Avoiding processed foods as much as possible is also very helpful. As with local honey, it’s good to eat as much locally grown food, especially leafy greens, as possible year-round to build up your immunity to local allergens.
Spring Cleaning
This one may seem obvious, but keeping your home as clean as possible during allergy season can help alleviate allergy symptoms. Pollen can travel through the air and land just about anywhere, so be sure to dust and vacuum frequently in the spring and early summer. Of course, using natural cleaning products whenever possible is ideal!
